Reliability engineering runs through the normal life span of the electronic equipments—from the phase of product design, manufacture, install, use, and to maintain. Reliability based design and manufacture are vital to ensure the product to be reliable over its life cycle.

During the electronic equipments’ use, they may encounter the following environmental conditions--high temperature, low temperature, high humidity, low pressure, hazardous gas, fungi, salt spray, shock, vibration, radiation, electromagnetic interference, etc. When subject to these stresses, a product with reliability-based design (anti-severe environment, thermal and EMC designs), fabrication technology, management, and analysis techniques, is able to operate appropriately. Failure analysis model building is one of the most important considerations to assure the product’s reliability under prescriptive environment conditions.

Environmental testing gives the manufacturer quality assurance that their product is ready to be put on the market. It also allows them to see how their product will withstand the storage and shipping conditions that it will encounter. Environmental testing allows manufacturers to ensure their product will be reliable under almost any condition it may be exposed to over its lifetime.
